¡KLAK! por mas que me apresuro el tiempo no pasa mas lento

A hundred (100) actions in a space.

Variable duration for an open ensemble between one (1) and a hundred (100) performers.

2024.

¡KLAK! is a compilation project that includes a series of scores, texts, and exercises about decentralized self-organizing mass activity. That is, a complex phenomenon whose structure is determined by the free agency of its constituent elements.

There is something about the mass movement  that catches my attention. How can we organize ourselves? How can information be transmitted efficiently? How is consensus achieved?

A functional massive action requires a degree of improvisation to be in a continuous dialogue with the present and every other person. It is the multiplicity of simple actions that modifies the space, appealing to patience, subtlety and organization.

These works operate by mixture of graphic and text scores that instructs on the distribution, repetition and improvisation of "simple" actions across a space over an indeterminate amount of time, executed by an open number between 1 and 100 (or more) performers.

first work in progress at the University of Uruguay.

performed by the Experimental Sound Art Ensemble of the University of Uruguay. Recorded by Elisa García. May, 2024

At the time, the title was "Si los pájaros carpinteros fuéramos humanos (procesos para la transformación de un espacio)".

This piece was developed throughout 2024 and is part of a series titled Invisible, Forgotten, Inaudible: Time Tactics, created with the support of the Jóvenes Creadores Grant from the Sistema de Apoyos a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales (SACPC) of the Mexican Ministry of Culture.

THE BOOK

This project was consolidated in an editorial publication of the same name. The book is structured in two parts: The first is the score itself, and the second is a collection of texts, sketches, journal entries, diagrams and ideas for hypothetical works that arose from this creative process.

HOW?

This work is proposed to be performed in an extended concert, appealing to the intervention of a given space, rather than a conventional concert hall. The structure of KLAK! favors adaptability to spaces and materials. Although the score contains a suggestion of stipulated objects, there is also an openness to modifying the materials used in favor of its execution using pre-existing resources in the environment.

An open call is being made to people interested in its execution (it is not a requirement to have previous experience in musical interpretation). Those interested will be provided with an instructional video as supplementary material to the score, and in the same way, an introductory talk prior to the concert is planned to clarify any doubts and become familiar with the material in situ.

PERFORMED

2024 Monteaudio24 Festival Internacional de Arte Sonoro: Abstracción - El Quitapenas, Montevideo, UY.

2024 Encuentro Nacional de Creadores - Jardín Escénico, Chapultepec, CDMX, MX.

As I progressed in this project, I realized that my interest was more in the way of encoding and transmitting information to generate a massive and directed activity in an almost spontaneous way.

Performance at  Jardín Escénico (2024)

For the performance at the Jardín Escénico I wrote an adaptation for that specific site under the length they had requested.

I put out an open call for anyone who would like to participate, there were about 50 of us, several people joined at the last minute.

Below is a selection of the scores written for that day (click the image for download on high res):
