bio
Fernando Feria is a composer, sound artist, educator and improviser interested in the ways of gathering, encoding and transferring information. Intersecting fields of improvisation, linguistics and computer science, his work explores the sound dimensions of social organization, communal learning and data visualization. His practice spans multichannel acousmatic installations, written contemporary pieces, performance, and music releases mixing influences from free improvisation, noise, ambient and glitch. He had collaborated with artists such as Mabe Fratti, Concepción Huerta, Buena Tarde, Andy Martin, Emiliano Cruz, Pol Villasuso, among others, and is a member of projects such as La Kriego, Phi Movement, OSSMO, and No Para Siempre. His work has been shown/performed in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, New York, California, Montevideo, Santiago and Buenos Aires.
Fer has been invited to take part in music and technology summits hosted by the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He was a professor at the Universidad Libre de Música (ULM) in Guadalajara throughout 2022 teaching courses on Sound Semiotics & Composition, and Programming in Pure Data. He recently opened an independent space for the study of the sound arts from an interdisciplinary and decolonial perspective. And currently holds the Jóvenes Creadores Grant by the SACPC (National Young Creators grant by the Department of Culture of Mexico).

I work with sound, movement and cognitive processes. To listen is to be aware of the movement in a space and listening is the prelude to a conscious action. Every action is mapped out in sound, albeit a quiet one. Soundscapes are built collectively through the sum of individual actions, thus every soundscape is engraved by every participant and vice versa. Space, sound, and beings are interdependent forces for their mutual development. My latest work has been guided by investigating every-day objects, actions, and language, and using improvisation and situational composition to suggest scenarios in which sound is used as a social space to foster collective knowledge.
