Fernando Feria is a composer, sound artist and educator whose work intersects the fields of improvisation, coding and communal memory. His practice spans multichannel acousmatic installations, written contemporary pieces, performance, and music releases mixing influences from free improvisation, noise, ambient and glitch.
As composer he has been awarded by the Afrolatin Jazz Alliance (NYC, 2020), the Ministry of Culture of México wining the National Young Creators Grant 2023- 2024 (Jovenes Creadores, SACPC); and his work has been shown/performed in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, New York, California, Montevideo, Santiago and Buenos Aires. Feria has collaborated with artists such as Mabe Fratti, Concepción Huerta, Buena Tarde, and Andy Martin, among others. Is a member of projects such as La Kriego, Phi Movement, OSSMO and No Para Siempre.
An advocate for interdisciplinary and decolonial approaches to sound art, Feria founded an independent study space in 2022 focused on exploring sound arts through these lenses. He has taught courses in Semiotics, Composition, and Pure Data programming at the Universidad Libre de Música in Guadalajara and has been a featured participant in technology and music summits hosted by the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

statement
My work lives in the intersection of improvisation, coding and composition, often materializing as multimedia installations, live performances, and various forms of music-making.I’m increasingly shifting my focus from how something sounds to how something is listen, and the many configurations our body may adopt when listening or performing.
Improvisation is central to my practice. It opens the possibility to learn how to act in the midst of uncertainty while cultivating a deeper understanding of diverse forms of communication.
Time and memory are recurring threads in my work, as sound inherently engages with these dimensions. I often think of ways of gathering, encoding, saving and transferring information through time. I like to think that working with sound-time is like folding a crystal origami to create a kaleidoscope of memories.
A recurring question is: how do we structure data? Then, How do we encrypt it? How is it lost? And Who has access to it?
From here, I branch out to think about noise: Noise as unintelligible information.
Noise as an interference.
Noise as an encryption code.
Noise as resistance.
Through this lens, I investigate how systems of organization might emerge. My work is an ongoing attempt to understand the ways we collect and share information. Dwelling on memory, the act of listening, and the possibilities of collective action.
